About Jim

I've got to tell you, knowing what to include on this page is one of the more difficult decisions I've had to make in putting this website together. It reminds me of the line in Bob Seger's Against the Wind, "what to leave in, what to leave out." So, I'll cover some personal and some professional information.

I'm from Harrington. It was a great place to grow up...Boy Scouts, MYF (Methodist Youth Fellowship), Little League, high school sports. My grandfather owned the pool hall so I spent a lot of time learning bad habits (being careful not to exercise them under his watchful eye). I graduated high school in 1967, worked at the DuPont nylon plant in Seaford for a year, then joined the Navy. After Boot Camp in Great Lakes, Illinois, I went to Pensacola, Florida, where I trained as a Communications Technician (CT). After Pensacola my duty stations were in Morocco and on Guam. After my discharge I moved to Dover, went to Delaware State College, then moved to California where I lived for 17 years. I worked in radio in Bakersfield and Fresno. I moved back to Delaware in 1991 and married my high school sweetheart. Carolyn and I have two kids and four grandchildren with number 5 on the way.

I got my real estate salesperson's license in 1997 and my broker's license in 2006. In Delaware to hold a broker's license one has to first be a licensed salesperson, taken and passed the broker's licensing course, and completed at least 30 transactions during the previous five years. In the interest of full disclosure, I hold an Associate Broker's license which indicates I am not responsible for the day-to-day management of an office. The licensure requirements, however, are identical. I got my broker's license because I wanted my clients to have peace of mind that they were doing business with someone who was experienced and had more relative education than someone who had just gotten into the business. Experience matters, wouldn't you agree?

On the Welcome! page, I mentioned my goals as a broker. My primary goal is to have the best, most complete, marketing system that any agent or brokerage can offer. I've worked hard to develop the marketing pieces I'll use to get your home sold. I've had 15 years to put them together. I've participated in many marketing classes designed specifically for real estate sales, many of which were National Association of REALTORS' classes. I've spent my own money to acquire studies regarding how buyers go about finding a home, what they look for in a home, and how to help my clients present their homes so they make positive, immediate, and lasting impressions. I feel I owe you that if I'm asking you to trust me to get your home sold. After all, any agent can put your home in the MLS (multiple listing service) and a For Sale sign in your yard. I believe I have to be willing to give before I can ever hope to get.

As far as my long term goal, I would like to have my own brokerage at some point. The reason I'm with RE/MAX Horizons is that, for all intents and purposes, I can run my business as I best see fit. It's a business model that attracts the very best (certainly the most ambitious) agents. I don't know, but it wouldn't surprise me to find out that there are more licensed brokers under the RE/MAX brand than any other franchise nationwide.

Well, that's about it. I'm not inclined to talk about myself so I've left out my hobbies, the list of Merit Badges, and that whole thing about "long walks on the beach." You're welcome!

Now I'd like to know about your goals as a seller. What do you expect to get for your home? What time frame are we working with? Have you already picked out your next home? Do you want to build? If so, where? Do you already have a lot or do we need to find one for you? If you'll just send me an e-mail we'll get started. I look forward to hearing from you!
